Martyr
In the side chapel of Our Lady and S. Richard Gwyn there is a replica of Michelangelo's Pietà perhaps the most famous of the representations of the Blessed Virgin Mary lamenting over the dead body of Christ, which she holds on her knees. Also there, hangs a copy of the icon Mother of God of Czestochowa a gift to the Cathedral by members of the Polish community whose presence in the parish is significant. To the right of the entrance to the sacristy a modern window is to be seen. Designed and made at the nearby College of Art in the 1980's it is in memory of S. Richard Gwyn (born in 1536) a schoolmaster, who died for his faith, being hanged, drawn and quartered in the Beast Market, Wrexham in 1584. Opposite that window is a relic of S. Richard Gwyn mounted on a replica of the Tyburn gallows, the "triple tree" as it was called. To the left hangs an icon of S. Richard Gwyn in which scenes of his life are depicted. The icon was commissioned and painted in 2000 as part of the Cathedral's millennium celebrations and consecrated by Bishop Edwin Regan at the annual celebration in memory of S. Richard Gwyn on Sunday 15 October, the date of his execution. A small plaque near the confessional was placed in the Cathedral in memory of David Lord a member of the parish. It is inscribed as follows:
" Of your charity pray for the soul of Flt. Lt David S.A. Lord, VC DFC RAF killed in action at Arnhem September 1944, formerly an altar server in this church"
After 89 years of being the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Menevia the cathedral was translated to St. Josephs, Swansea, as on the 12 February 1987 the Diocese of Menevia was reconstructed. A month later on the 18 March the Diocese of Wrexham was established and S. Mary's became the Cathedral Church of the new Diocese.
For over 150 years Catholics in the town of Wrexham have worshipped in this building, both at Sunday and weekday Mass as well as on special occasions such as Baptisms, First Holy Communion, Weddings and Funerals, as well as ordinations of Bishops, priests and deacons. The present Catholic community in Wrexham continues to endeavour to love God and neighbour in the spirit of Christ. |
